II.Refugee Law in Istanbul: Current Challenges to 1951 Geneva Convention

Turkey as a country hosting more than 4 million refugees amid the biggest refugee crisis of the history is a laboratory for Refugee Law. In this respect, Istanbul Center of International Law (ICIL) is organizing its annual Winter Academy of International Law (WAIL) dedicated to Refugee Law in cooperation with Istanbul Law School.

Objective of WAIL is to promote the capacity building among Turkish law students in terms of specialization in Refugee Law to properly tackle with social and economic challenges of the reality of refugees. At the same time, we would like to enable foreign law students to analyze, learn and observe on-site Turkish experience on Refugee Law in Istanbul.

Academic organization of the WAIL is two-folded; The first part of the winter school is dedicated to the current legal challenges posed by Syrian refugees and their current situation in Turkey. The second part is dedicated to the international challenges against Refugee Law. The lecturers were carefully selected from Turkish and foreign experts who have valuable insight and significant expertize on their respective topics.

 

ICIL is operating changes in terms of content and organization to increase the quality of the program year by year. 2018 edition of WAIL is focused on the current challenges against the 1951 Geneva Convention.

All applicants should fill the online application form. In addition, they should submit 1 page long (450 words max.) motivation letter and updated CV as application package. Applications will be evaluated on rolling-basis therefore; early application is highly advised to the candidates. All the applicants should furnish a proof of their level of English which allow them to follow the lectures.

 

Places are limited to 45 participant including ICIL Formation Program students. Deadline is set for 12 January 2018, Friday 24:00 UTC. Late applications won’t be taking into consideration.

 

Once a candidate receives the letter of acceptation, he or she should make the payment of tuition fee in 10 days. Otherwise, the candidate’s participation will not be finalized.

Lectures will be held at the historic doctoral hall of Istanbul University Faculty of Law.

Tuition fee is 175 Euros which doesn’t cover accommodation and meals. Selected participants are responsible for their own arrangement of accommodation and meals.

 

Partial scholarship is available for Turkish participants. However, due to reserved places for ICIL Formation Program students, it is fairly limited.

 

ICIL Formation Program students benefit special fee designated for them.

 

In case you need visa to enter to Turkey, you should contact us as soon as possible after receiving your acceptation letter. We will issue an invitation letter for you to facilitate the visa process.
